Electronic Book PDF Design
DIY: Digital Design Suggestions | Electronic Book Design Service

The world is embracing the standard of PDF (Portable Document Format) for E-books!

Adobe Acrobat Reader (standard PDF app)  is free to anyone and comes in many new computers standard. This allows anyone with a computer a chance to read your book on disk (after purchasing it from you!). Most e-readers can read PDF file format.

Using PDF locks many elements into place on the electronic "page". Books in other formats may not retain fonts, and therefore will alter the flow of the page and may make traditional elements such as table of contents and index incorrect. PDF also keeps inserted items in place - no sliding off the page or disappearing totally.

PDF allows authors more control of the E-book that is purchased - you can make the book read only (the customer can not make changes) as well as restricting printing. While printed books use the honor system for Copyright control, the PDF format allows you the added comfort of knowing that most buyers will not be breaking the law, either knowingly or through a wish to share this great work.

Basic electronic manuscript adjustments for PDF may include:

  • Some sort of electronic book introduction the explains, at least, what the electronic features are (and how to use them) as well as an overall available edition listing (with feature description, pricing, and order information).
  • Fully computer searchable
  • All cross-references can cross-linked
  • Table of contents can cross-link
  • Items such as foot/end notes, list of illustrations, etc. can cross-link
  • Index can cross-link - if the file is not made computer searchable
  • Any hyperlinks that are in the material should be live - in case the reader is on an internet capable appliance
  • Links to extra material in electronic book, not included in printed edition
  • Optimization for small screens can include removing all illustrations from text and replacing with links instead - allowing for text only.
  • Some form of Copyright protection
