Tape
and staple softbound books are sometimes referred to as side stitch softbound books.
For a tape and staple book, the collated text block has separate front and back covers
applied. The book block is then wire
stitched, or "stapled", on the binding edge. Cloth or plastic binding tape
is then applied down the binding edge of the book. The tape covers the
wire stitched staples. This is both advantageous to the reader and the book
itself. The reader won't get stabbed on the back side of the staples, and
the book itself due to the fact the raw edge of the staple is not subjected to
as much stress as item catch and pull on them.
While custom printed tape
can be produced, the drawbacks and costs of this particular type of binding
allow for the generally accepted statement that tape and staple book spines are
blank (non-imprinted). However, some ingenious authors, have been known to
use cloth tape and then employ a calligrapher to hand label each spine.
This method has nearly been
replaced by the perfect bound method, which offers
a more pleasing finished product. However, there are those that would prefer a
staple to glue.
There are those who like
the ascetic look of a tape and staple
book as well. For those, we now also offer, upon request, the fastback
cloth tape method to eliminate the acidity/rust factor of the wire stitch
through the years.
