Sometimes, the choice of index format is governed by economics of a printed book. We suggest that an index format is used that the author would like to see in a reference book. Regardless of one's ultimate choice of index format, it is sometimes tempting to disregard - even a completed index - to save the cost of printing the extra pages. With the strong growth of personal computers in the home, a suggestion is placing that 50 pages (not uncommon for a large book) of index on CD to include in all book sales. Offer a print out upon request for a print out fee - this can be staple bound, 3-hole punched, etc.

Book Manufacturing Concepts - paper grain part 2
///////////////////////////////
To test the grain of paper use one of the following:
Moisten two right-angle edges of a sheet, and press between fingers. As she sheet dries, the edge across the grain will be wavy, the edge with the grain will be straight.
Tear the sheet in two directions. It tears straighter and cleaner with the grain.
Fold the sheet in two directions. It folds easier and smoother with the grain.
End-use need, design considerations, print quality and budgetary needs should go into deciding what paper to use.

If an author chooses to, applying for ISBN numbers will get the book(s) in the "Books In Print" reference series. Additionally, many stores that special order, do so from this ISBN database. An ISBN number (and barcode) may be required if one plans to utilize a large wholesale distributor. ISBN website included below.

When preparing for a genealogy trip, always check to see what information is available online for the repository. In some cases, the card catalog may be available. In others, you may apply for a users card and, once it has arrived, even be able to schedule pulls so that your books will be waiting for you at the desk when you arrive at a given repository.
