Milling:
The spines of books and periodicals can be
cut away on a milling machine to prepare them for oversewing. A machine
clamps the
text block, spine down, and
moves it over rotating blades, cutting away (grinding) approximately 1/8 inch of the
binding margin, allowing for a clean edge to bind. For
rebinding, this removes old adhesive, thread, and/or folds of
signatures. After milling, all
text blocks are
comprised of lose leaves.
Non-reproducible (color
- generally blue): Many times
referring to special light blue or red pencils (or specialty colors such as lime
or purple) that do not reproduce when put
through the printing process. Any mark produced by any means on paper that
will not reproduce may be considered "non-repro". If using a pencil, keep
the tip dull as sharp tips will crease the paper and the crease itself in some
cases will reproduce.
Terms marked with an asterisk (*) are not generally used in our office.

The illustration on this page is of a gatefold (single fold) back cover. gatefolds can be placed throughout a book and may fold more than once. The standard difficulties with this is the wear on the paper creases and overall cost. While gatefolds may be included in both hard and soft cover books, paper types can be further economically restricting.

An archival sleeve may also be attached to the cover where you may place large format items. This is one way to bridge the gap between bound in and electronic large format items.

Don't want to set up a separate online presence for each book or interest you have? Focus your web presence on yourself - with separate micro sites or landing pages for each book. Don't fall into the catalog trap for promoting your books. It's easy to create a catalog listing with basic information. However, each book deserves special treatment. Remember, you are the author. Consider your online presence as the PR archive for the book. Anyone need PR information or graphics, send them to your book page(s). It's a good idea to get all your books in a lot of catalogs as well, and a catalog listing is a great way to make all your books "one click" away.

Remember during your research that any information you
receive from an original person (rather than stories or something passed down)
should be noted. If you don’t record where the information or item originated,
who will? Keeping this information safe, and recorded beyond your living memory,
will do many favors for those who are yet to come.

Worried about Windows 10? It appears difficulties with the jump forward may be more hardware based. Yes, both Windows and Office have upgrades and changes from the old version, but this occurs with every upgrade. Don't forget that Microsoft has helpful information pages - some of which are centered directly on "what's new" to access free of charge.
