Hard Binding Spine Inlay Types
(not all types are available with every binding option)

square back hard binding with hard strip spineHard strip spine (green spine pictured at left): For these hard covers, a hard strip inlay is made from material that is the same thickness as the front and back cover boards, with the inlay slightly narrower than the text bulk.  This creates a book with "shoulders". Soft Strip Spine Inlay on Hardbound BookSoft strip spine (maroon spine with maroon/gold head band pictured at right): This hard binding method uses a thin card stock spine strip equal to the thickness of the text bulk. Click here for measurement information for this type of color binding.

square back hard cover spineSquare hard cover spine (brown spine pictured at left): This hard cover uses an inlay which is of the same weight board as the front and back case boards, but the spine is made 3/16" wider than the text bulk.  This creates a solidly "square" look and increases stress at the cover hinges with use.
