This spiny, tough plant has many of the same characteristics of the Scots personality.  The legend for its adoption is thus: during King Alexander III (1241-1286) reign of Scotland, King Haakon of Norway attempted to conquer the land. The Norseman tried a night attack at Largs. Being barefoot, they stepped on thistles. The resulting cries alerted the Scots to the attack and it was a failure.

This Scottish symbol for love dates back to the 17th century. This romantic design is also used for betrothal, affection or friendship. The hearts symbolize love while the crown is for loyalty.
