What's It Mean?
///////////////////////////////
Back/Backing (see round): The binding process of dispersing the swelling of the spine of a rounded text block and shaping it into a shoulder on each side of the spine of a text block. Backing accommodates the thickness of the boards, and provides a hinge along which they can swing freely. Backing also helps to prevent the spine of the text block from collapsing into a concave shape over time.
*Backbone (see spine): Center edge of a book perpendicular to and between its covers.
*Backing up: Printing a sheet after one side has already been printed.
* refers to a term not actively used at Gregath Publishing

Do you have more than 500 pages in you book
manuscript, but still prefer a printed book?
Consider a "hybrid" printed book and CD combo package!
Cut the size "in print", but adding a CD to the back of the book. Place most (if not all) of your photos (color, black and white, etc) and documents on a CD for the back. Place forms, charts, and additional material you may not have justified "in print" space for on the CD. Add video, audio, and anything else to the book that you can think of. Even photos that you place in the book b/w, if they are color, add them to the CD. Many times, this "hybrid" book approach can lend much more enjoyment to a book project, while saving money for the bottom line. The CD can be placed directly on a hub (or nub) attached to the book. Generally, you can find these on the inside of the back cover. They can also be placed in sleeves attached to the book. If it is an optional CD, they can even be placed in loose sleeves or jewel cases.

Many authors choose their book shipping method and secure the materials necessary as they receive their published books - sometimes even before. Once the books arrive, they repackage them from their bulk containers into the single book mailing boxes (or envelopes), complete with the return address marked and any insert information. Then, when they have an order, all they have to do is address the package and mail it. If they have a multiple order, boxes can be strapped together with tape, or they can still be shipped individually. This is of use when trying to "freeze" S&H costs over time while figuring sales price.

No one is an island - get involved. One of the easiest ways to grow and learn as a researcher is to get out there and interact with other researchers. Book learning not your thing? The more friends you have, the more information they can give you in an informal setting. Try genealogy, history, lineal, and other service organizations!

Computer aid!?!

Don't be bullied into Windows Vista. Every new version of a program (or operating system) means change. Unfortunately, you will have to make a plan to eventually use the new system, but it doesn't have to be today. On your "to do" list, research Vista online, check out a library book, schedule a "study date" with a friend who already has it (offer to bring the snacks), attend lectures or even an evening Vo-Tech class on the subject. Even if you need a new computer, you may be able to put it off until you've had a chance to make friends with the new Windows.
