Corners - Traditional: Overhang shall be cut away  at a 45-degree angle at each corner. All head and tale overhang shall be turned into the case, then the tip of the corner tucked in before the fore and back edges are permanently adhered. Meets library binding standard: ANSI/NISO/LBI Z39.78

Cover: The outer part of any book. Covers are generally classified as hard or soft. Type of cover effects types of bindings possible.

Design Inspiration

Publishing a hard copy edition (unbound or in hard or soft cover) one-at-a-time (print on demand) presents some unique options most printed editions do not have. As you are printing a single book for a single customer, consider adding value to the book by including the following offers:

  1. Number each POD book you produce. Keep track of books in hard cover and soft cover, or total produced. Your first could be 1 in 2014, 1 Print on Demand, or some other way - the next ordered would be 2, etc.

If publishing a hard copy edition (unbound or in hard or soft cover) one-at-a-time, consider creating a truly unique book by offering to produce additional customer supplied content as a family section for additional charge.

Marketing advice

As family historians, most authors have a list of public (or private) repositories that they would like to see their work preserved in. Many times this list equals or dwarfs the list of "paying customers". Many times budget will impact how many courtesy copies may even be produced: Consider soliciting sponsored copies. With POD, there is no reason a special "donated by" page can not be included directly into the book binding. A more traditional route would be with personalized donation book plates. Further incentives, beyond the good preservation work, might include a gift, digital copies of source material, special access to your archives, etc.

Needing to migrate templates from older systems? One work-around is to open each and save a "blank copy" as a file, then open that file in the updates system and save as template once more.
