What’s It Mean? A-Z

Cover Plate (Artwork Engraving): A product necessary for the inclusion of special artwork such as drawings, coats of arms, borders, etc. on the front cover of a hard bound book. Also, more economical than per line imprint for multi-line impressions and/or large orders.

Cross-Trained: Employee familiar with most aspects of the printing process, has experience with many physical processes and equipment (plate maker, press, etc.).

Digital Printing: Many different things are defined as digital printing.  We feel the true definition is a system where a computer is hooked directly to a printing press.  Many times this term is used for copy machine work both from computer file and hard copy.  We have a digital copy machine that prints directly from computer file - see Print on Demand.

Dimensional Stability: The degree to which paper retains its dimensions during applied stress or changes in moisture content.

Working with a book project that needs to be durable, but soft cover is still preferred? Consider binding in soft cover using a thin, pliable plastic material. Cover imprint of ink is still available and the price upgrade is economical. Perfect for cookbooks and publications that updates are frequent, but durability is a goal.

Consider utilizing the $1.00 color hard cover binding  offer through the first of January! This reduces book costs and provides a longer usage book over soft cover.

Always include information on how to order more books. Bind promotional material in the back, or just a couple of lines on the verso will do.

Make your own worksheet (form) with your favorite word processing program. Enter into a blank file the labels (and space to record data) for all the data you want your form to record. You may wish (or be required) to enter underlines for the area you want to fill out. Be sure you allow enough space between lines for your usual method of entry. Adjust spacing and font style/size as you see fit. Save the file with a good name in a place you can access it easy. Some programs will allow you to save it as a template. When you want to use it, open it and before adding any data - save it as a different name and/or in a different place. If you have Adobe Acrobat (instead of just reader), you can even save the blank file as PDF, open it in Acrobat and make it a fillable form (see computer aid).

If you have Adobe Acrobat, any file you save or produce as PDF can be made into a file that you can type directly onto, while the base elements remain exactly in the format of the original. Instructions may vary a bit due to version but here's the general process: If your file isn't PDF, either save as PDF or print to PDF. Next, open the PDF in Adobe Acrobat, then look to the "form" option (pull down menu in older versions). You want to start the form wizard. Quick reminder, if you want a list of options that only one can be selected at a time you want radio buttons; if you want multiple list options, choose check boxes, etc.
