In 1983, an Oklahoma Diamond Jubilee project, The History of Ottawa County was published. This book is now out of print, though available at many Ottawa County area libraries and archives. It's author, Velma Nieberding was widely acknowledged as the Ottawa County historian. While the late Nieberding did an outstanding job, there is no book that is able to include everything. During her lifetime, Mrs. Nieberding did an excellent job in preserving Ottawa County's past. A large portion of her diligent work is prominently embodied in her book(s). The nineteen year interval between the Ottawa County history and the first volume of the Families series being published has seen much history.
An ongoing series in progress, dealing with Ottawa County, was initiated in 2002. Carrie Ann Cook, rural Fairland, and Fredrea Cook, Miami, are collaborating in the project, entitled Ottawa County Families. Both women are published authors and teachers and well known in the genealogical and historical fields.
It is hoped that individuals and families from Ottawa County will submit information and stories about themselves and the project book(s) will become welcome additions to homes and collections around the area. If families were not placed in the original history, this book is for their history. Families that were in Nieberding's original book may wish to submit additional stories or information updating the original published data - plans are to cross-reference these profiles. This will be an ongoing project that should serve as a nice companion to Mrs. Nieberding's work and a wonderful extension of accessible, published, county history and stories. Because Ottawa County is a large area filled with rich history and interesting families, there will be as many Ottawa County Families volumes as information is available.
Submitting information for inclusion in the upcoming book(s) is free of charge and easy to do. A release form may be printed out from the website or picked up and returned to Gregath Company, Inc. offices. OFC Project information can be emailed to us, or even mailed to PO BOX 471, Wyandotte, OK 74370. If there is a desire to include a photograph, the submitter is charged a small fee ($15.00 per photo).
