The Late Sooner
(Fiction)
Other Works: See Below

In my mother’s spare bedroom, stuffed in a walnut antique cabinet, I discovered a brown speckled ledger with ragged edges. The yellowed pages crackled as I opened it. It was my great-grandfather’s diary. Sanford Deering commented in one-line-a-day entries on his life in the 1880’s and beyond. He, his wife and children made the trek from Missouri to be among the first families in the initial opening of the Unclaimed Lands in the Oklahoma Territory in 1889. His daughter, Nora, was my father’s mother.

The more I read, it became clear to me I had to tell his story after being buried for 120 years. Thus, The Late Sooner came into being.

I have traveled to Oklahoma and researched in the Logan County Genealogical Society’s archives for the accuracy of historical facts. The basic story line is true. Where Sanford left gaps, I filled in the blanks.

Through the societies’ assistance, I was able to locate a simple limestone rock which serves as my great-grandmother’s headstone in Rose Lawn Cemetery near Mulhall, OK.

Come with me now to the year 1887....

Oklahoma Books and Authors Showcase 2010

"I was born and raised in Ft. Scott, Kansas, and graduated from William Woods University in Fulton, MO. I married my high school sweetheart, Vic Jadlow a month after graduation. We moved to Kansas City and over the next twenty years, had four children.

Three of our four are married and we are the proud grandparents of eleven grandchildren, ranging in age from eighteen to two.

While I tended our children, went to their ball games, sang in the church choir, and sewed, I also wrote poetry. For thirty years I shoved the poems under our bed. Finally, I got up the nerve to share some of it with a newly-formed writer’s group at church ten years ago. To my surprise I discovered a whole new world of loving writers and helpful critique groups and conferences. It wasn’t long before I tried my hand at writing short stories and devotionals.

In 2001, I published Sonflower Seeds, a book of inspirational short stories and poetry and entered it in the Oklahoma Writer’s Federation contest the following year. It took the award for Best Book of Poetry at the Oklahoma Writer’s Federation in 2002.

My short story, “Sara’s Surprise,” published in Kansas City Voices, took first place at the annual Missouri Writers’ Guild in 2006 for Best Short Story in a Literary Magazine for the year 2005.

I serve on the board of Heart of America Christian Writers’ Network, and am an active member of Kansas City Writer’s Group, Oklahoma Writers’ Federation, Missouri Writers’ Guild, and Abilene Writers Guild.

My work has appeared in various places including Kansas City Voices, The Mid-America Poetry Review, Mature Years Magazine, Women Alive Magazine, Vista Magazine, Beanie Baby Stories, The Best Times, Lifeline Journal, The Lawrence Journal World, Writes of Passage, and The Christian Communicator.

When not writing, I serve corporations in the greater Kansas City area as an ordained chaplain, working with Marketplace Ministries out of Dallas, Texas and teach creative writing to grade schoolers."
